In a rare moment of bipartisan inspiration, the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to take a cue from the exemplary relationship between the Jinapor brothers. Speaking on Tuesday, 21 January 2025, during the parliamentary session confirming John Jinapor as the Minister for Energy, Afenyo-Markin highlighted the brothers as a symbol of unity in an often-divided political landscape.

The Jinapor brothers—John Jinapor, an MP for the opposition, and Samuel Abu Jinapor, an MP for the majority and Minister for Lands and Natural Resources—have managed to maintain a strong familial bond despite their differing political affiliations.

Afenyo-Markin commended their ability to rise above partisan divides, reminding MPs that politics should never come at the expense of relationships or the collective goal of serving the nation. “Ghanaians should watch this; the politics we do should not divide a family,” he remarked.

The Minority Leader also underscored the importance of collaboration and mutual respect among politicians, particularly during high-stakes processes like ministerial confirmations. Acknowledging that energy policy was not his area of expertise, Afenyo-Markin deferred to colleagues with relevant knowledge to guide the discussions, setting an example of humility and teamwork.

Afenyo-Markin’s address also served as a reminder for politicians, especially during election seasons, to steer clear of divisive and inappropriate behaviour. He urged MPs, particularly those on the majority side, to conduct themselves with decorum and avoid inciting tensions at polling stations.

Drawing from the Jinapor brothers’ example, he pointed out that politicians share a common space in service to Ghana, regardless of party affiliations. “Those who go to polling stations and misconduct themselves should learn from the Jinapor brothers,” he stated, urging his colleagues to reflect on their actions and prioritize unity.

Hon Afenyo-Markin’s call serves as a timely reminder that the ultimate goal of governance is to work together for the betterment of the country.
