The People’s Alliance for Governance and Accountability (PAGA) is demanding answers from Government over revelations that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) was aware of the AKSA bribery investigation as far back as last year, yet no meaningful action was taken or heard of.
In a press statement, the pressure group said the disclosure raises troubling questions about the seriousness of Ghana’s institutions in confronting corruption allegations involving public officials.
“This is troubling, particularly when EOCO says it was aware of the investigation as far back as last year, yet no meaningful action was taken or heard of,” the statement said, noting that the Ghanaian aspect of the case appears to have commenced only after United States proceedings had concluded.
PAGA said the apparent lack of urgency, combined with conflicting positions of state institutions, raises serious questions about Ghana’s handling of the matter.
The group demanded a full accounting: what investigations were commenced when the allegations first became known, what evidence was obtained, who was questioned, and what action followed.
It also called on the OSP, Attorney-General, EOCO, the Financial Intelligence Centre and other competent state agencies to obtain and preserve the full evidential record arising from the US proceedings, including financial records, emails, exhibits, recordings and testimony, and to investigate every Ghanaian beneficiary, facilitator or public official identified in the evidence without fear or favour.
