The First Deputy Minority Whip, Honourable Alhaji Habib Iddrisu has raised questions about the absence of members of the Majority side to Parliamentary business. The Tolon MP who was unhappy with the absence of over 120 members of the Majority called for the suspension of the final debate on government’s decision to enter into another deal with the International Monetary Fund.
“Mr. Speaker, I think the Majority side on many occasions have to take this house very serious and also take your government business very serious. The Minister responsible for finance made a statement on the new engagement of the IMF and the progress made so far but your side is not interested. Out of 189 members that you have, less 40 are in the chamber and you know that the Majority leader will be concluding on the debate”, he stated.
The unhappy legislator urged the Speaker Presiding not to allow for the conclusion on the debate since the Majority side was absent. He stressed, “You have less than 40 members in the house and when we raise quorum issues, we are seen as doing so in bad faith but that is the practice. The leader of the house and the minority leader concluding on a very important government policy position and the minister is not here, the deputy is not here, your members are not here.
Mr. Speaker, I don’t think we should conclude on this. The Majority side must get their members to listen to this important conclusion of the debate. If the minister is not here his deputy must be here so Mr. Speaker if they can’t get their members here and we raise quorum issues don’t blame us’.
The concerns from the deputy minority whip comes in the wake of recent concerns about how the Anti-LGBTQI+ bill was passed with concerns of the absence of a quorum to properly pass it.
