The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) of Ghana has reported a significant increase in cybercrime cases, with financial losses exceeding GH¢19 million between January and September 2025. This alarming trend highlights the growing threat of cybercrime in the country and the need for increased awareness and vigilance.
Addressing participants at the International Conference on Information Systems and Emerging Technologies on Monday, October 27, the Head of Cyber Security Technology Standards, Jake France, reveals that incidents of online fraud have surged sharply this year.
According to Jake France, cybercrime cases have been on the rise in recent years, with various types of scams and attacks affecting individuals, businesses, and organizations. Some of the most common types of cybercrime he noted include the following:
-Online shopping scams: Over 210 cases reported between January and October 2024, resulting in losses of over GH¢410,000.
-Data breaches: 1.2 million breaches recorded in the first quarter of 2024, representing a 997% increase from the previous quarter.
-DDoS attacks: 4,753 attacks recorded, overwhelming systems and making them unavailable.
The Report:
The financial losses resulting from cybercrime are staggering. In 2023, Ghana lost GH¢59,924,837 to cybercrime.
The GH¢19 million lost in the first nine months of 2025 is a significant concern, and it’s clear that more needs to be done to prevent these losses.
The CSA and the Ghanaian government are taking steps to combat cybercrime. Some of these efforts include__Regulatory measures: The CSA is working to regulate the cybersecurity industry and ensure that service providers are licensed and accredited.
Public awareness is also aiming to educate the public on cybersecurity best practices and warning against prevalent cyber threats.
Again Collaboration between the CSA and law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to combat cybercrime is another measure put in place .
The rise of cybercrime in Ghana is a serious concern that requires a concerted effort to address. By understanding the types of cybercrime and the financial impact, we can take steps to prevent these losses.
The CSA and the government are working to combat cybercrime, but more needs to be done. It’s time for individuals, businesses, and organizations to take cybersecurity seriously and work together to prevent these crimes.
