The National Chairman of the Peoples’ National Convcntion, Mr. Sampson Asaki Awingobet has called on the political class to avoid politicizing the devastating floods that hit Accra on Monday after hours of torrential rains.
According to him, the focus of all stakeholders should be about how to find solutions to deal with the annual ritual of flooding in the national capital. “As a people, we should be worried about why this has happened and not to apportion blame to people”, he said.
He rubbished claims that relocating the capital from Accra will help deal with the flooding situation saying, “relocating the political capital from Accra does not necessarily mean the cause of the floods will be dealt with but a necessary decision that must be taken to decongest the capital. Accra is already choked; our gutters are all choked because many people have built on water ways and on gutters making it difficult for water to flow freely”, he stressed.
Mr. Awingobet called on duty bearers to ensure that people who build on water ways are dealt with and that those structures are demolished. “We should have the political will to make sure that all structures on water ways are removed without fear or favour”, he insisted.
Several homes and structures were destroyed by floods caused by torrential rains on Monday leaving over 20 people dead and several people still missing. Government has since directed that the Ghana Armed Forces to clear the debris left in the wake of the floods. The personnel are also expected to demolish all structures built on water ways.
