NPP Decides: Angry candidates threaten legal action over suspension of Yendi elections

Some candidates in the suspended Yendi Constituency Executive Elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have called on the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) to immediately lift the suspension and set 31 July 2026 for the polls, warning that it will seek legal action if its demands are ignored.

In a press release, the group accused the NEC of suspending the election without a full investigation or giving affected candidates the opportunity to be heard.

The group said the suspension stemmed from disputes over the alleged removal of some polling station executives from the constituency album during the vetting process but maintained that the issues have since been resolved through the intervention of the Constituency Chairman and other stakeholders.

They urged the NEC to reopen the party’s electoral system to restore all affected names and finalise the constituency album by 21 July 2026, insisting there is no constitutional basis for extending the mandate of the current constituency executives.

While commending the Council of Elders and other party leaders for pursuing an amicable resolution, the candidates warned that they would seek court orders to compel the party to conduct the elections and prevent the current executives from remaining in office beyond their mandate if the suspension persists.

The group maintained that internal dialogue remains its preferred option but stressed that the continued suspension undermines grassroots democracy, party unity and confidence in the NPP’s internal electoral processes.
