Bawumia wasn’t the problem — Kofi Ofosu Nkansah points to NPP’s unpopularity in 2024 loss

The former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Mr Kofi Ofosu Nkansah has come to the defence of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia following the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) poor showing in the 2024 general elections.

In a candid Facebook post, Mr. Nkansah dismissed claims that the party’s flagbearer was to blame for the electoral defeat, pointing instead to widespread public dissatisfaction with the government as the root cause.

“Our Government/Party had obviously become unpopular in 2024, hence our seats reduced to 88,” he wrote. “Yet some people expected Dr. Bawumia to do magic with the presidential. As if when we got 41.75%, we won 150 seats.”

According to him, the outcome of both the parliamentary and presidential elections clearly reflected a broader disillusionment with the NPP, not with its presidential candidate.

“Once the people become unhappy with a government or party, no candidate can save the situation, and this is reflected in both our presidential and parliamentary results,” he added.

Mr. Nkansah’s remarks have been widely interpreted as a defence of Dr. Bawumia and a challenge to voices within and outside the party seeking to place blame squarely on his shoulders.

The NPP suffered significant losses in the 2024 elections, securing only 88 parliamentary seats and losing the presidency to the then-opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). The party is currently in a period of reflection and restructuring.

Mr Nkansah’s post adds to the growing conversation about the future direction of the NPP, with calls for unity, reform, and a closer connection to the concerns of the electorate rather than lambasting each other.
