The opposition NPP is urging the government to discard any idea of selling the new Headquarters of the Bank of Ghana despite recent denials from the Central Bank and some government sources.
The appeal from the opposition party follows a recent publication by myjoyonline.com that a source at the Central Bank had told the portal that there have been discussions about the potential sale of the new headquarters in order to deal with the rising debt obligations of the entity.
According to the report, the plan was to sell and lease back the facility as part of a broader plan to cut down on losses being made by the Central Bank. However, the bank issued a statement denying the report describing it as fake and that the bank has not discussed such an idea.
But a statement issued by the opposition party and signed by the Co-chairman of the Finance and Economic Policy Committee, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam said, “we acknowledge the Bank’s denial and take it at its word that no such transaction is on the table today”.
The statement however added that, a media house in the standing of the Multimedia Group does not fabricate such a story. It said, “a media house of the Multimedia Group’s standing does not fabricate a story of this specificity. The June 1 report described a sale and leaseback structure, a value of $260 million, and even a split on the Bank’s board. Such detail comes from people close to the matter and not from thin air”.
The opposition party urged the government to take what it said is the honest route. It said, ” the honest route is a credible recapitalization plan, real expenditure discipline, and an end to loading the Bank with losses it should never carry, such as those arising from entities like GoldBod. No Asset sale can offset policy decisions that drain the institution from within”.
