It appears the call by the Council of Elders of the governing NDC for flagbearer aspirants to stop all acts of campaigns ahead of the contest has fallen on deaf ears as surrogates of two ministers who have been tipped to battle for the slot are on each other’s necks over budgetary allocations.
What started with a simple announcement by the Deputy Minister of Finance, Thomas Ampem Nyarko that about 1.6 billion cedis representing about 85% of the budgetary allocation to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture has been released for their operations.
That announcement triggered a response from aides of the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku who took to social media to discount the claims. An aide to the minister took to X and posted, ‘Total falsehood and lies to the international community’.
It did not end there as the Media Liaison Officer to the Minister for Agriculture, Samuel Huntor issued a statement debunking the claims of the Deputy Minister of Finance.
Though the Ministry of Finance has released what it said is proof of release of allocation to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, social media has gone agog as both supporters of the governing NDC and opposition have jumped onto the controversy to share their opinions.
Director of Communications for the Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia Campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye who has had a field day with the controversy wrote on his facebook page, ‘Ato has Provided documents to justify his own lie. Ato just called Eric too a liar. That gives us two liars in cabinet now…I believe both Ato and Eric”.
Other users of social media platforms raised concerns about the impact of what is going on in the government. He wrote, ‘The Economy will crash if Agric Fails .So why will the Manager of the Economy deliberately Sabotage the Pillar of the Economy. #Hallucination
#ArtificialCreationofEnmity‘.
Some political watchers believe this is just the beginning of the turmoil in the governing NDC’s flagbearer race which is a year and half away.
