Former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Sunday, November 16, joined the National Chief Imam, His Eminence Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, his spouse Hajia Samira Bawumia, and several Members of Parliament to observe the 13th Commemorative Adua in honour of the late former Vice President of the Republic, Alhaji Aliu Mahama.
The solemn ceremony, held in memory of the distinguished statesman, brought together family, friends, political leaders, and admirers who continue to revere his enduring legacy of integrity, service, and humility.
Addressing the gathering, former President Akufo-Addo reflected deeply on his long-standing relationship with the late Aliu Mahama, describing him as “a very honourable, respectable man, a man of great integrity, who worked very hard for our country.”
He recounted their early days in the 1990s when leaders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) frequently visited Tamale to strengthen the party’s foundations. According to him, Aliu Mahama’s home became a hub of warmth, hospitality, and support, qualities that made him stand out as a unifier and pillar of the party.
“His house was where we would all go and socialise and eat. He was a most generous and hospitable host,” Akufo-Addo recalled with emotion.
He added that their bond remained strong throughout their years in government and even after leaving office, making Aliu Mahama’s passing a personal loss that still weighs heavily on him.
The former President expressed gratitude to the family for inviting him to participate in the remembrance ceremony, describing it as both an honour and a privilege.
He extended his well-wishes to the late Vice President’s children, including Farouk Aliu Mahama, and affectionately mentioned the late statesman’s daughter, whom he fondly called “photocopy,” along with the entire family.
Akufo-Addo prayed for the continued blessings of the Almighty God upon them and encouraged them to keep alive the values and principles their father embodied.
The 13th Commemorative Adua stands as a testament to Alhaji Aliu Mahama’s remarkable contributions to Ghana’s political development, his unwavering patriotism, and the profound impact he left on generations of leaders and citizens alike.
