The five-member committee set up by President H.E. John Dramani Mahama to investigate petitions against the Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo will begin its public hearings tomorrow, Thursday, May 15, 2025.

The committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, was formed by Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution after a prima facie case was established against the Chief Justice, Her Lordship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo. The decision to initiate the inquiry followed consultations with the Council of State, as constitutionally required.

According to the statement, the committee is expected to sit three times a week as it examines the substance of the three petitions that have been filed. At the end of its work, it will present its findings and recommendations to the President for further action.

In a statement released and signed on behalf of the president by Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of Government Communications and Spokesperson at the Presidency, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to follow due process and constitutional procedure.

“The President has acted strictly within the remit of the Constitution. This process is an important one for the integrity of our judicial system, and the committee will be allowed to carry out its mandate independently,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said.
