Deputy General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed has stringly criticized the current government over the recurring power outages, known in the Ghanaian palance as dumsor, describing President John Dramani Mahama as a Chief of Dumsor.
Speaking on Tolon Radio, Mr. Haruna stated that the ongoing power crisis mirrors the challenges experienced during former President John Dramani Mahama’s first term between 2013 and 2017.
He urged the President to focus on resolving the crisis instead of making excuses.
The NPP’s National Deputy Scribe remarks followed President Mahama’s recent State of the Nation Address (SONA), in which the President claimed credit for stabilizing the electricity supply during his previous administration. However, Prof. Haruna argued that Mahama had no moral right to make such claims, insisting that his speech misrepresented the true state of Ghana’s economy.
“Dumsor is back because the Chief of Dumsor is the president again,” he remarked. “President Mahama failed to fix dumsor during his first tenure, despite appointing a full minister to handle the crisis. Ghanaians endured four years of severe power outages, and even the minister resigned after failing to solve the issue.”
Prof. Haruna also advised business owners to invest in standby generators, warning that the current situation could lead to financial losses similar to those experienced between 2013 and 2016.
“Businesses collapsed during President Mahama’s first term, and we are experiencing the same situation today,” he affirmed
The recurring power crisis has sparked heated debates among Ghanaians, with concerns growing over the government’s ability to provide a stable electricity supply. As frustrations mount, many are looking for immediate solutions to mitigate the economic impact of the outages.
