The Minister-Designate for Education and former Minority Leader, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has expressed no regrets about his transition from the Minority Leadership role in Ghana’s 8th Parliament.

Speaking during his vetting process on Monday, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South reflected on his tenure and the impact of his leadership.

Hon. Iddrisu stated that he views his time as Minority Leader with pride, emphasizing the milestones he achieved during his seven-year tenure. “If you look at President Akufo-Addo’s last State of the Nation address, I should be the most encouraged. At least, he admitted that he suffered an effective opposition in the hands of Haruna Iddrisu and the likes of our other MPs,” he said.

The Tamale South lawmaker highlighted key accomplishments during his leadership, including the historic election of an opposition member, Alban Bagbin, as Speaker of Parliament. “Getting an opposition member elected as Speaker of Parliament is one of my proudest achievements,” he noted, referencing his strategic efforts during the parliamentary proceedings.

Recalling his efforts to rally support for Bagbin’s election, Hon. Iddrisu shared a metaphor that resonated with many within his party: “A tortoise would ride the elephant at dawn.” This statement reflects the resilience and determination that guided his political journey, even in challenging circumstances.

Despite his political affiliations, Hon. Iddrisu reiterated his dedication to prioritizing national interests over partisanship. “I believe that in the last seven years, I served my country well as Minority Leader, contributing to decisions that reflect the best interest of the nation and future generations,” he affirmed.

As he transitions into his new role as Minister-Designate for Education, his experiences and insights are expected to play a significant role in shaping the future of Ghana’s education sector.
