A leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Alhaji A.Y.M.B. Ibrahimah, has called for strict vetting of aspirants ahead of the Tamale Central by-election, describing the process as key to maintaining credibility and trust.

Speaking on the matter, Alhaji Ibrahimah said that although the by-election is taking place in Tamale, it is a national exercise led by the NDC’s leadership in Accra. He explained that while nomination forms are handled at the regional level, the entire process remains under the supervision of the party’s national structures.

He believes the vetting process will ensure only qualified candidates make it onto the ballot. This, he explained, includes checking whether forms are properly completed, verifying that aspirants are paid-up members of the party, and making sure they are not facing disciplinary issues.

Alhaji Ibrahimah also raised concerns about conflicts of interest, citing past controversies around dual citizenship. He said vetting must go beyond paperwork to test the character, integrity, and readiness of candidates to serve as Members of Parliament under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution and the NDC’s constitution.

“Vetting is not just a formality,” he stressed. “It is the safeguard that ensures credible and capable candidates stand on the ticket of the NDC in Tamale Central.”

He added that candidates must be prepared to accept the outcome of the process, even if it leads to disqualification. However, the party has made provision for appeals before the final list of contestants is announced.

The by-election follows the passing of the late MP, Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
