Members of the Minority caucus on the health committee faced off with some military personnel at the Afari Hospital Project on Wednesday, 10th June,2026 after the men in uniform attempted to block them from accessing the facility.
Minority MPs on Parliament’s Health Committee are demanding the immediate operationalization of the over 500-bed Afari Military Hospital, which they say has been abandoned and left to deteriorate amid overgrowth and neglect.
As part of their advocacy for the completed but abandoned projects to put to use, the Minority MP are embarking on a tour of all the facilities to assess their state. But upon arrival at the Afari Military Hospital, the legislators were confronted by some military personnel who insisted the sort for permission before being granted access.
The MPs maintained that public officials must be held accountable, insisting that when institutions fail to act, representatives of the people must step in to draw attention to the situation.
Speaking after the confrontation, Ranking Member Nana Ayew Afriyie said while the incident was unfortunate, the visit was necessary to highlight the abandoned state of critical health infrastructure.
“Nobody says these things are right, but it is necessary to put pressure on government. It is a tool for demonstration, a tool to express your feeling,” he said.
He further stressed the need for equitable development across regions, insisting that the Ashanti Region must not be left behind in national infrastructure delivery.
