Who Succeeds Mahama?: NDC Council of Elders steps in to stop chaos

The Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed all party members and groups engaged in premature presidential campaign activities to immediately cease such actions, citing the need to maintain party unity and focus on governance.

The directive was issued following a meeting between the Council of Elders and President John Dramani Mahama, who is also the leader of the NDC, on May 29, 2026. The meeting deliberated on matters concerning party discipline, unity, and the successful implementation of the government’s “Resetting Agenda.”

In a statement released by the Council of Elders, the party expressed concern over growing reports of early presidential campaign activities and endorsements by individuals and groups within the NDC, despite the absence of an officially declared timetable for presidential primaries.

According to the Council, the NDC’s immediate priority is delivering on the mandate entrusted to it by Ghanaians and supporting efforts to improve economic and social conditions across the country.

“At this critical stage of national reconstruction and renewal, every member of the Party is expected to devote his or her energies, resources, and commitment to supporting the Government’s efforts to reset the country and improve the lives of Ghanaians,” the statement noted.

The Council further reminded party members of Article 42 of the NDC Constitution, which stipulates that the date and venue for the election of a presidential candidate are determined by the National Executive Committee (NEC). The constitution requires that such elections be held at least 12 months before a national election when the party is in power.

The statement emphasized that until the NEC officially announces guidelines and a timetable for presidential primaries, no individual or group is authorized to undertake or promote any form of presidential campaign, whether directly or indirectly.

As a result, the Council ordered all forms of campaigning, mobilization, endorsements, publicity, and related activities intended to advance the ambitions of prospective presidential candidates to stop immediately.

Political analysts say the directive is aimed at preventing internal divisions and ensuring the governing party remains focused on fulfilling its campaign promises ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The Council also called on party faithful to rally behind the government’s development agenda and work collectively to meet the expectations of the Ghanaian people.

“The time for internal contests will come. For now, our collective responsibility is to serve the nation and successfully implement the mandate entrusted to us,” the statement concluded.

The development comes amid increasing speculation about potential contenders for the NDC’s future presidential nomination, even though the party has yet to open nominations or announce a roadmap for the selection process.
