The long-awaited establishment of a University for Development Studies (UDS) satellite campus in Yendi is finally set to take off in 2026, Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu has announced.

The Minister made the disclosure in Tamale during a ceremony where UDS conferred an honorary doctorate degree on the Overlord of Dagbon, His Royal Majesty Ndan Ya-Na Abukari II.

Mr. Iddrisu described the project as a transformational step toward expanding access to higher education in the Eastern Corridor and strengthening the university’s mandate of promoting equitable development across northern Ghana.

In 2020, the Ya-Na allocated a 500-acre parcel of land for the establishment of the Yendi campus, a gesture the Minister hailed as a profound demonstration of the king’s commitment to education and national development.

Haruna Iddrissu used the opportunity to urge on the people of Dagbon to remain united and focused on peace, noting that unity is the bedrock of lasting development.

“We have a moral duty and responsibility to uphold the peace and unity of Dagban,” he stressed.

The commencement of the UDS Yendi campus is expected to boost economic activities, enhance educational infrastructure, and strengthen human capital development across Dagbon and the Northern Region at large.
