Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 Presidential candidate of the NPP has rejected claims that the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections was caused by voting patterns in the Bawku zone or religious considerations.

Responding to comments attributed to NPP Presidential candidate hopeful, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Bawumia said the facts and figures do not support such assertions.

He explained that the NPP’s performance in the Bawku enclave has historically been weak and, therefore, cannot be blamed for the party’s loss in 2024.

According to him, the party won one seat in the area in 2008, none in 2012, two in 2016, one in 2020, and none in 2024. He stressed that out of six constituencies in the Bawku zone, the NPP has gone without a seat in six out of eleven elections.

Dr. Bawumia further dismissed suggestions that his religion played a role in the party’s electoral outcome. He argued that the data clearly show he performed better than many of the NPP’s parliamentary candidates in both Christian and Muslim-majority constituencies.

Citing Assin South as an example, Dr. Bawumia noted that he secured more votes than the party’s parliamentary candidate, Reverend Ntim, despite being a Muslim.

He urged party members and the public to rely on evidence and not propaganda in assessing the causes of the NPP’s electoral defeat.
