The General Manager of Tolon-based radio station, Tolon Radio, Mr Halik Musah, popularly known as Adugali has criticised Professor Ransford Gyampo over his recent comments on illegal mining, widely referred to as galamsey.

The outspoken media personality took to Facebook to express his displeasure with the professor’s remarks, describing them as unhelpful in the national discourse on ending illegal mining.

Professor Gyampo, CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority, is reported to have said that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) lacks the moral right to critique the government’s handling of galamsey, citing their failure to address the issue during their time in office.

But Mr Halik, in a sharp rebuttal, advised Prof. Gyampo to refrain from commenting on issues that, in his view, require practical engagement rather than academic credentials.

“Certificate and governance have no connection. You can be a doctor or a professor and still be an idiot. This guy makes sense when he’s quiet,” Mr Halik wrote on his Facebook page.

He further argued that the fight against illegal mining is not a partisan issue but a shared national responsibility.

“The conversation around galamsey shouldn’t be about who failed. It is a national crisis and every Ghanaian, regardless of political affiliation, has a role to play,” he added.

The maverick popular radio presenter also questioned the relevance of academic qualifications in governance, stressing that leadership should be measured by one’s understanding of the people’s needs.

The exchange has since sparked mixed reactions on social media, with many calling for more constructive dialogue on the fight against illegal mining one of Ghana’s most pressing environmental challenges.

Galamsey continues to threaten the country’s river bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves, despite successive governments’ promises to tackle the problem.
