Police in the Volta Region have arrested 26 people in connection with drug-related offences following a targeted intelligence-led operation on May 24 at the Aflao Border area.

The operation, carried out by the Volta Regional Police Command, aimed to clamp down on suspected drug peddling and other related crimes in the area. The arrests were made at various locations around the border enclave, which has recently come under increased surveillance.

According to a press release by the police, several items were seized during the operation, including 20 wraps of substances suspected to be Indian hemp, 12 sachets of Tramadol tablets, a quantity of dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp stored in a rubber bucket, and 26 compressed parcels of suspected Indian hemp hidden in a fertiliser sack.

Also retrieved were six drug-laced toffees, eight creams believed to contain narcotic substances, as well as cash amounts totalling GHC 30,558.00 and 17,500 CFA.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned in court in the coming days.

The statement signed by DSP Felix Darku of the Volta police public affairs unit says the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to tackle the growing threat of drug trafficking and abuse in the region.
