Tempane: DCE threatens to terminate road contract over abandonment

The District Chief Executive for Tempane, Joseph Mbilla, has threatened to terminate the Akara-Kongo road contract if the contractor fails to return to site by Saturday, June 20, 2026.

Mr. Mbilla made the announcement on June 16, 2026, during an inspection tour of ongoing and stalled road projects in the district.

He visited a project awarded to a contractor in January 2025 with a 12-month completion period. The contractor requested and was granted an extension, but according to the DCE, has since abandoned the site.

“If he fails to return to site by Saturday, the contract will be terminated and awarded to someone else to serve the good people of the area,” the DCE warned.

The DCE also inspected the Tempane-Kongo-Basyonde road, a key trade route linking traders from Togo to Ghana and other districts. The road collapsed years ago and is yet to be reconstructed.

Residents expressed frustration over its condition, saying about 90% of it is now cut off. They noted that President John Dramani Mahama and NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah have both used the road and witnessed its poor state. Residents added that the road connects several communities and districts.

Mr. Mbilla urged the community to exercise patience, saying he is working with the Minister for Roads and Highways, through Tempane MP Lydia Akanvariba Adakudugu Lamisi and other authorities, to ensure the road is fixed.

He said reconstruction of the road would also make it possible for the district to get a dam/dugout to support irrigation farming and reduce youth migration for jobs.

The DCE said three issues keep him awake at night, chief among them the fact that most communities in Tempane are still not connected to the national grid.

“It gives me a headache whenever I see my people struggling, going to the ground to grind flour for food,” he said.

He noted that residents cannot farm all year round, but irrigation would help them make better use of land in the Tempane area.

He also lamented that no single tarred road exists in Tempane District, making it look different from other districts.

“My biggest wish is to get tarred roads linking Tempane to Garu, Tempane to Pusiga, and Tempane to other areas. If I can get that, I would be one of the happiest persons in the world,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Mr. Mbilla said development projects including CHPS compounds, school blocks, and rural electrification extensions are currently ongoing in the district through the efforts of his office, the MP, and the Minister for Public Sector Reforms, Lydia Akanvariba Adakudugu.
