Ghana will bid farewell to its longest‑serving First Lady on Friday, 28 November 2025.

The state funeral, announced by President John Dramani Mahama and confirmed by the Agyeman‑Rawlings family, will be held at Independence Square in Accra, opening at 6 a.m. with the arrival of the cortege.

Funeral details as follows :

Date: 28 Nov 2025

Time: 6 a.m. (cortege arrival)

Venue: Independence Square, Accra

Attire: All‑black, no official funeral cloth.

Public access: Open to everyone; only one ceremony will be held.

President Mahama, who visited the family at their Ridge residence, praised Nana Konadu’s “19 solid years” as First Lady and her pioneering work with the 31st December Women’s Movement. He assured the nation that the government will provide full honours and support the family’s traditional rites after the state ceremony.

Nana Konadu Agyeman‑Rawlings, 76, passed away on 23 October 2025 at Ridge Hospital after a brief illness. She served as First Lady from 1979‑1979 and again from 1981‑2001, later founding the National Democratic Party and running for president in 2016 and 2020.

Family head Oheneba Akwasi Abeyie, flanked by MP Zanetor Agyeman‑Rawlings, thanked Ghanaians for their outpouring of sympathy and urged those wishing to pay respects to schedule visits on weekdays only. The government’s announcement underscores her lasting impact on women’s empowerment, education and national development.

The nation prepares to honour a woman described as “Mother of the Nation,” with dignitaries expected from across Ghana and abroad. As the country counts down to the ceremony, memories of her legacy—from palm‑oil projects to women’s micro‑enterprises—continue to resonate.
