The Mayor of Tamale, Hon Adam Abubakari Takoro has been appointed as the Interim West African President of the World College of Mayors (ACM).

The appointment, announced earlier this week, puts the Tamale Mayor at the helm of a global network that brings together city leaders to tackle urban challenges and drive sustainable development.

As Interim West African President, Mr Abu Takoro will represent the WCM on the world stage, promoting its mission and forging partnerships with governments, NGOs and private sector actors.

He plans to bring workshops, training sessions and conferences to Tamale, equipping fellow mayors with modern governance tools and policy strategies.

The role builds on Takoro’s recent unanimous confirmation as Tamale’s Metropolitan Chief Executive, where he secured 100 % endorsement from the Metropolitan Assembly.

Takoro’s leadership style has already drawn regional attention.

Speaking at the African Public Service Optimum Awards in Accra two days ago, he stressed the need for “transformative leadership” that blends vision, integrity, compassion and innovation.

Those same principles are expected to shape his tenure at the WCM, especially as he seeks to strengthen regional cooperation and showcase Tamale’s development agenda internationally.

In his own words after the confirmation as MCE, Takoro pledged to “work tirelessly with all stakeholders to ensure the holistic development of Tamale and its surrounding communities”.

The new WCM role gives him a broader canvas to turn that promise into action, from climate‑resilient urban planning to youth‑focused initiatives.

Expect announcements of joint projects with international donors and tech firms aimed at improving waste management, water supply and digital services in Tamale.

A series of workshops for West African mayors is slated for early next year, with Tamale as a pilot site.

As the interim president, Takoro will help shape the WCM’s agenda for West Africa, potentially influencing funding priorities for the whole sub‑region.

The appointment comes on the heels of Takoro’s active community outreach, including recent support for 200 farmers with guinea fowls, feed and veterinary supplies. Observers say his hands‑on approach could make the WCM’s programs more grounded and effective.

Tamale is buzzing with optimism. As one local put it, “Having our mayor lead a global body is a huge vote of confidence for the north, and we’re excited to see what he brings back home”.
