The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. The Honourable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has been appointed to serve on the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) Task Force on the peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine.
The appointment, announced by the President of the IPU, recognises Speaker Bagbin’s integrity, impartiality, and proven ability to build trust among parties in conflict.
According to a letter signed by the IPU Secretary-General, Martin Chungong, the Speaker’s experience and leadership will strengthen the Task Force’s ongoing efforts to promote dialogue and support diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending the war.
The IPU Task Force, established in March 2022, has served as one of the few international platforms enabling Ukrainian and Russian parliamentarians to engage directly. It has so far held more than thirteen meetings and undertaken peace missions to both Kyiv and Moscow.
Speaker Bagbin joins seven other parliamentarians drawn from all six geopolitical groups of the Union. His inclusion is expected to enhance the Task Force’s mandate and renew international momentum toward peace in Eastern Europe.
In his new role, the Speaker will participate in high-level meetings during IPU Assemblies, hold discussions with Ukrainian and Russian delegations, and engage with global leaders to help advance peace efforts.
The appointment also reflects Ghana’s growing reputation in international diplomacy and peacebuilding.
