Board Member of the National Peace Council and spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, is urging the government to act decisively against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
His call comes as pressure group Democracy Hub staged a protest demanding urgent measures to curb the menace, which has been described as an existential threat.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the International Day of Peace commemoration, Sheikh Shaibu warned of the dangers galamsey poses to the environment and society and urged the government to heed the concerns raised by Democracy Hub
“I hope the government will listen to them and the government will do whatever it takes to really keep it in check. Because everybody agrees that galamsey is an existential threat, there is no metaphor to use. Everybody now agrees,” he stated.
