The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has settled on Professor Seidu Alidu as its candidate for the upcoming Tamale Central by-election, following the conclusion of party primaries today.

Out of a total of 1,500 valid votes cast, Professor Alidu secured a commanding 840 votes, defeating 11 other contenders. His closest rival, Hanan Gundadow, polled 536 votes, while the remaining votes were shared among the other aspirants.

The by-election has become necessary following the untimely death of the late Member of Parliament, Comrade Murtala Mohammed, who tragically lost his life in a plane crash earlier this year. His passing left a deep void in both the constituency and national politics, as he was widely known for his outspoken nature and commitment to social justice.

The Electoral Commission has scheduled the by-election for September 30, 2025, setting the stage for what promises to be a closely monitored political contest.

Professor Alidu, a seasoned academic and political analyst, is expected to leverage his popularity within the party and his strong grassroots connections to retain the seat for the NDC. Political watchers believe his overwhelming victory in the primaries is a strong signal of unity within the party as it prepares for the upcoming polls.

Meanwhile, other political parties are expected to soon announce their candidates, with the Tamale Central by-election projected to attract national attention due to the constituency’s strategic importance in Northern Region politics.

With Professor Alidu now leading the charge for the NDC, the focus shifts to whether he can consolidate support beyond the primaries and secure victory on September 30.
