President John Dramani Mahama has removed the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo, from office with immediate effect.
The decision, announced on Monday, follows the submission of a report by a Committee established under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution to investigate a petition brought by a Ghanaian citizen, Mr. Daniel Ofori.
The Committee found that the grounds of stated misbehaviour under Article 146(1) had been established and, in line with constitutional requirements, recommended her removal.
President Mahama, acting under Article 146(9), accepted the Committee’s recommendation and formally revoked Justice Torkonoo’s appointment.
A statement issued and signed by Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament and Spokesperson to the President, confirmed the development.
