Nursing trainees across the country have begun receiving long-awaited training allowances, as the government disburses GHS 462 million to support over 120,000 students in Nursing Training Colleges.

The Ministry of Health confirmed the payment in a press release issued today, stating that the amount covers allowances for six months. The disbursement, which began today, is expected to continue through to next Friday.

This development marks the fulfilment of a key campaign promise made by President John Dramani Mahama, who pledged to restore and maintain the nursing trainee allowance as part of his broader commitment to the health sector.

According to the Ministry, the payment forms part of a government initiative aimed at easing the financial burden on nursing students and boosting morale among future health professionals.

“This is a significant step in improving the welfare of nursing trainees,” the statement read. “It aligns with our broader effort to strengthen the health sector by supporting critical human resources during their training.”

The Ministry also expressed appreciation to President Mahama for honouring his promise and to all stakeholders who played a role in facilitating the timely release and distribution of the funds.

Tony Goodman, Deputy Director and Spokesperson for the Ministry, reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to working with nursing institutions to ensure the continued delivery of quality healthcare education across Ghana.
