COULD DR BAWUMIA BE THE ABRAHAM LINCOLN OF GHANA?

A couple days ago, l spoke to a Ghanaian leadership coach based in Canada, Dr Daniel Ofori. The conversation was about the suitability of the persons aspiring to be the President of our dear country in 2029. Dr Ofori was honest about his low understanding of politics and admitted that he does not teach nor engage in any form of politics. He says, politics is time consumimg, expensive, cumbersome and unending. I agreed with him.

But this dude understands what leadership entails. I was fascinated when he elucidated on the qualities of what he termed as “achieving leaders”. He coaches people how to be good leaders. He spoke informatively about leading by example. I deduced from our conversation that, leading by example is one of the central tenets of intelligent, quality and deliverable leadership. Intelligent leaders carry people along. They persevere to succeed. Their goal is to get things right.

Leading by example allow a person in position of leadership to have rapport with the people, subjects and or workers. He or she provides practical guidance and maintains

growth-focused mindset.

“Exemplary leadership is the most genuine and natural form of inspirational leadership”, says Dr Ofori.

Clearly, my take home from my conversation with Dr Ofori is that leaders who model the behaviors they want to see in their people are more likely to succeed than others. The key to the success of exemplary leadership is to turn desirable behaviours into habits, assuming full, authentic ownership.

The principles of good leaders are rooted in respect, integrity; and creating a foundation where human dignity is honored and citizens are empowered to achieve small wins that build lasting momentum.

A leader’s success or achievement cannot only be the strategic decisions he or she takes, it is also about leading by example.

Ghana’s search for trustworhy, transparent and competent leadership in our routine four year hiring and firing since the inception of the Fourth Republic has produced little results. We ought to get it right in December 2028.

This is why l advocate STRONGLY for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to be hired to bear the flag of the New Patriotic Party for the 2028 Presidential elections. The 31 January, 2026 NPP Presidential primaries will show or tell how prepared we are as a party to provide astute leadership for our country. It may also expose our unpreparedness to win and most importantly to govern.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia exemplifies truth and honesty. He leads from behind where he empowers and supports his people to take initiative and make decisions. He demonstrates humility, kindness, respect and good judgement. He is incorruptible, fair minded and action driven. He is not controlling and doesn’t buldoze his way in decision making. He allows debates and expertism to guide his decision making. Creativity, collaboration, and innovation remain his major working tools.

One of the greatest Presidents of the United States was its 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. His leadership was compassionate, courageous, creative, and focused on empowering people. Lincoln led by example, with integrity and confidence. He communicated carefully, keenly aware of his strengths and weaknesses in this respect. He embodied what people like Dr Ofori admire and respect in leaders – exemplary leadership.

Lincoln’s sterling success can be attributed to his leadership during the Civil War in 1861, his role in abolishing slavery, and his ability to preserve the Union. He successfully navigated the USA through its most divisive conflict.

Dr Bawumia could be the Abraham Lincoln of Ghana. He could provide the leadership that galvanises our country and the citizens for our perpetual search for economic empowerment, social freedom and modernising government.
