The former Vice President and NPP president candidate for the 2024 elections, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed deep concern over the arrest and continued detention of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
In a facebook post earlier today, Dr Bawumia questioned the lack of clarity surrounding the charges and called the current situation troubling. “In a democratic environment like ours, no individual is above the law,” he stated. “Equally, no Ghanaian, regardless of political affiliation or status, should ever be denied their constitutional rights.”
Dr. Bawumia emphasized that he has been in touch with Wontumi’s legal team since morning to ensure that his rights are protected and due process is followed. He praised the lawyers for their “professionalism and vigilance” in handling the situation.
The Vice President also urged the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and all relevant state institutions to act strictly within the confines of the law. “Any deviation from these principles risks undermining public trust in our justice system,” he warned.
“Ghana must always remain a nation governed by law not by arbitrary power,” Dr Bawumia concluded, adding that the strength of the Republic lies in institutions that are both firm and fair.
His comments come after the arrest and detention of the businessman and Npp Ashanti regional chairman by EOCO
