The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has issued a clarion call to lawmakers around the world to rise to the challenge of climate change by using their legislative influence to drive meaningful action.

Speaking at the 11th Nevsky International Ecological Congress in St. Petersburg, Speaker Bagbin highlighted the unique and powerful role that parliaments play in shaping climate policy, pushing for sustainable development, and fostering ecological resilience.

“Legislative bodies must not only enact laws but also ensure that climate action is fully integrated into national development agendas,” he stated. “This is not just about policy—it’s about survival.”

He outlined Ghana’s own efforts in combating climate change, including initiatives focused on environmental protection and investment in renewable energy. Speaker Bagbin also underscored the need for national budgets to reflect serious commitments to environmental restoration and encouraged fellow lawmakers to engage their communities in embracing climate-friendly practices.

The Congress concluded with the adoption of a resolution geared toward strengthening international cooperation on environmental issues. This resolution is set to be presented at the upcoming United Nations Conference, marking a step forward in the global fight against climate change.
