The leadership of both the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) have endorsed MP for Tamale South, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu’s nomination as Minister of Education designate.

They are very optimistic that the former student leader will be able to tackle key challenges confronting the education sector including teacher welfare, resource allocation, and infrastructure development.

Nominated by President John Mahama, Haruna Iddrisu is expected to implement significant reforms to improve educational outcomes. Stakeholders are optimistic about his leadership and hope for a collaborative approach to address the sector’s longstanding issues.

The General Secretary of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Mr. Thomas Musah said the Tamale South MP knew the terrain very well, having previously served as the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations.

The association expressed the hope that under his tenure, the challenges confronting the education sector would be addressed.

Mr Musah stressed that the nomination of  Haruna Iddrisu was in the right direction and that he was comforted under the man whose activities as a student leader culminated in the establishment of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).

He said it was during his era as the President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) that there were some demonstrations when the management of the University of Ghana wanted to introduce the academic facility user fees and “at the end of the day, we advocated an education fund which culminated in the GETFund”.

Mr Musah said Mr Iddrisu had gained experience by being both in and out of government while he had been an MP for 20 years, adding that “I don’t think it should be a difficult thing at all for him (to handle)”.

The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, also expressed confidence in Haruna Iddrisu’s ability to effectively lead Ghana’s Ministry of Education.

“I see him as very capable, a very competent person who can handle any ministry, including education, once he is approved by the committee,” Carbonu stated in an interview

Haruna Iddrisu, born on September 8, 1970, in Tamale, Ghana, is a lawyer and prominent politician with the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He has served as the Member of Parliament for Tamale South since 2005 and held various ministerial roles, including Minister for Communications, Trade and Industry, and Employment and Labour Relations. He also served as the NDC Minority Leader in Parliament from 2017 to 2023.
