The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has suspended its strike on illegal mining (Galamsey) following the members’ vote. The association announced on Tuesday.

In a letter dated October 29th 2025 with reference number UTAGN/2024/vol.2/0081, the association stated that, “Our ongoing campaign against galamsey has been driven by its devastating impact on Ghana’s environment, water bodies, and countless communities whose livelihoods depend on these resources. UTAG remains unwavering in its commitment to efforts to safeguard our natural resources from the harmful effects of illegal mining.

According to UTAG, “suspending the strike was not an easy decision, as we recognize the importance of the cause we are advocating for. We understand that this may disappoint some members of the public, and we do not take their confidence in us lightly. However, the current circumstances in the country as well as the interests of our students and their parents/guardians have made it necessary to explore alternative legal avenues to add”

The Association noted that it would continue campaigning for clean water and to save the environment.
