The First Deputy Minority Whip, Honourable Alhaji Habib Iddrisu has demanded that the Minister of Sports and Recreation briefs lawmakers on preparations ahead of the 2026 World Cup in USA, Canada and Mexico.
Alhaji Habib who also doubles as the MP for Tolon in the Northern Region while speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday questioned the Majority Leader on when the Sports Minister will appear before the house to brief them on preparations ahead of the tournament which kickstarts on 11th June 2026.
Though the Speaker Presiding, Honourable Bernard Ahiafor and the Majority Leader, Honourable Mahama Ayariga tried to stop him from making his case, the Tolon lawmaker insisted that the Sports Minister must brief the house.
“Mr. Speaker, I still insist that, this is not the first World Cup Ghana is participating in and at all given times we have been briefed as a Parliament by the minister. I think tomorrow or in two days’ time the tournament is starting and nothing has been said.
The President has spoken to this matter that there might not be government sponsored program and we have asked for the minister to brief the house for more than two weeks now. Why is the Minister running away from Parliament while his members are not happy with certain happenings in the country”, he insisted.
TICKET ACQUISITION
The First Deputy Minority Whip also raised questions about the purchase of a thousand tickets from the Ghana Football Association. “we are aware that government has procured one thousand tickets from GFA, we are aware and the Ambassador has issued a statement saying that Ghanaians in the diaspora should write their names and get tickets for the matches. Who bought the tickets? How much is it costing the taxpayer?”, he quizzed.
The 2026 World Cup is expected to kick off on the 11th of June 2026 in three countries and despite assurances from government that it will not fly fans for the tournament, there allegations that supporters of the governing NDC are clandestinely being sponsored.
