NDC Elections halted in Garu and Bawku Central over directives from Upper East Regional Secretariat

The NDC reorganization process scheduled to start on Saturday, June 20, 2026, has been put on hold in 2 out of 15 constituencies in the Upper East Region due to petitions.

According to party sources, elections in Garu and Bawku Central constituencies have been suspended following petitions from some executives.

In Garu constituency, petitioners claim the system failed them and they could not file their nomination forms. They are asking the party to halt the Garu constituency branch vetting and elections following the omission of some branch executives’ names from the Elections Directorate dashboard.

Preliminary investigations indicate that over 1,000 people filed for the branch executive elections across 87 polling stations in Garu constituency.

Speaking to Atungo Iddrisu Kassim, the NDC Elections Director for Garu, Issah Amoli, said the development came as a surprise.

According to him, nominations were done online, not manually. He said all constituency election executives who matter in the election in Garu were called to the region and educated on how the process works.

He noted that some individuals decided not to pass through the online process but chose to file nomination forms by manual hard copy instead. That made their names not to be captured in the final list of the NDC national dashboard.

One of the aspirants from Senebaga branch, Richard Awinbilla Mbawin, said it will be unfair for someone who did not follow the right process to contest him after he went through the proper online procedure. He emphasized that there should be a fair election, not one that favors others.

He also alleged that nomination forms were opened for everybody to follow the process, but some decided not to pass through it and used their own way. He therefore called on the national and regional executives to ensure the right thing is done as per the party’s structures.

He argued that, during the filing period, the Member of Parliament for Garu Dr. Thomas Anaba assisted by passing information through radio to the general public on how the process was to be done. He claims that Dr. Anabah also provided two IT personnel to assist anyone who wanted to file their form and paid for any executive who wanted to file a form.

It’s also alleged that some branch executives refused to benefit from the MP’s support and rather filed their forms manually. They claim the system failed them and are now accusing the MP of being behind the omission of their names.

However, some youth, constituency executives, and branch executives say the MP has no link to the online system because everything was done online and the MP has no authority over the NDC national dashboard.

Richard expressed deep concern, saying it baffles him that after all branch executives were trained on how the system works, the same people are now calling for the suspension of elections so those who filed manually can be considered. He said that means they want to ignore the party structures and use their own way.
