Parliament Energy Committee demands clarity on missing ECG containers

The Parliamentary Committee on Energy is demanding urgent clarification from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) after it was revealed that more than 1,300 containers of electrical equipment have gone missing from the Tema Port.

The revelation surfaced during a strategic meeting held at the Peduase Valley Resort, where the committee engaged with key stakeholders in the power sector, including ECG, the Bui Power Authority, and the Volta River Authority. The meeting formed part of a broader consultative process aimed at refining operational strategies for 2025, with a focus on advancing the Renewable Energy Master Plan.

According to earlier disclosures by the Minister of Energy, Hon. John Jinapor, ECG had imported a total of 2,491 containers of cables and other electrical equipment, which were reportedly left uncleared at the port. However, a recent audit by the Ministry of Energy has found that only 1,134 of these containers can currently be accounted for, leaving 1,357 containers unaccounted for.

Addressing the committee, ECG’s Acting Managing Director, Kwame Kpekpena, said the company is working in collaboration with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority to locate and recover the missing items.

“We acknowledge the discrepancies and are taking steps to ensure a thorough investigation and recovery process,” Kpekpena stated.

The Energy Committee, which is responsible for parliamentary oversight of the country’s power infrastructure, has vowed to ramp up scrutiny to promote transparency and efficiency within the sector.

In a further development, policy think tank IMANI Ghana is expected to participate in the next round of consultations, where it will provide an independent analysis and offer policy recommendations.
