The former Member of Parliament for Yendi, Dr. Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama, has made a compelling case for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2028 general elections in Ghana.

Drawing from Ghana’s electoral history, he expressed optimism that the NPP stands a strong chance of reclaiming power if strategic reconciliation and effective planning are prioritized.

On his Facebook page, Dr. Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama analyzed the electoral dynamics between first-time and repeat presidential candidates.

He noted that President John Dramani Mahama is serving his final term as President and he cannot contest in the 2028 election per the 1992 constitution as he has already served his first in 2012.

The situation according to the former Yendi legislator, will require the NDC to present a new presidential candidate in the next election.

Conversely, if the NPP retains former vice president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its candidate, the party could gain a significant advantage.

“In 1996, Kufuor contested for the first time and lost to the NDC with a significant margin—39.67% for the NPP versus 57.37% for the NDC”. Dr Mahama explained

“At the time, the NDC secured 133 parliamentary seats, while the NPP managed only 67. However, four years later, Kufuor contested again against the NDC’s new candidate and won decisively.” He analyzed

He emphasized that the 2028 election present a similar scenario, where the NDC is introducing a new candidate and the NPP will potentially maintain Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as their flagbearer.

“Reconciliation is key. The party must come together, resolve internal differences, and develop a strong, unified front to leverage this historical opportunity.” He stated

Dr. Farouk Mahama’s insights provide a roadmap for the NPP’s potential resurgence.
