We’ll trigger a recall of Parliament – Afenyo-Markin announces

The leader of the NPP MPs in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has revealed plans to recall Parliament on Wednesday, October 23, following recent tensions surrounding the adjournment of the House.

In an interview with Citi FM on Tuesday, October 22, the Effutu MP expressed his dissatisfaction with Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin’s decision to adjourn parliamentary sittings indefinitely.

Mr Afenyo-Markin suggested that the Speaker’s decision is part of a deliberate strategy by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to obstruct the smooth conduct of parliamentary business.

He accused the Minority caucus of intentionally trying to disrupt critical governmental functions and stall the progress of key legislation needed to stabilize Ghana’s economy.

The Efuttu MP highlighted the urgency of recalling Parliament to resume essential government work, including the passing of crucial bills and deliberations on national matters.

He expressed concern that the indefinite adjournment risks delaying vital economic interventions that the government is pushing forward to address current challenges.

Mr Afenyo-Markin accused the NDC MPs of engaging in tactics aimed at derailing the government’s plans, stating that their actions threaten to create instability and undermine efforts to boost Ghana’s economic recovery.

He stressed the need for unity in Parliament and warned that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not allow the opposition’s strategies to succeed.

Despite the heated political atmosphere, Mr Afenyo-Markin assured the public that the NPP remains committed to ensuring that parliamentary business proceeds smoothly.

He reiterated that recalling Parliament is necessary to ensure that the legislative body fulfills its duties to the nation and that the government can continue implementing its economic policies.

Mr Afenyo-Markin reaffirmed the NPP’s resolve to counter what he described as the opposition’s disruptive tactics.

He emphasised that the party will not be deterred by the NDC’s actions and will work to maintain the flow of government business, despite the Speaker’s adjournment.

“God willing, tomorrow [Wednesday, October 23], the Majority will trigger the recall of Parliament because the actions of the Speaker are undermining Parliamentary work so that the economy will suffer and so we will trigger the recall of Parliament and we will see what he [Bagbin] will do.”

“A court has ordered you to take action and you are going around the issue meanwhile he is not Parliament so we will trigger a recall.”
