Dr. Sule Iddrissu bows out of Tamale Central By-Elections

In a dramatic turn of events, Dr. Sule Iddrissu, a leading contender in the Tamale Central by-elections, has withdrawn from the race, citing the crowded field of aspirants as a key reason for his decision.

“This is not the kind of contest Dr. Sule envisaged when he announced his intentions. The numbers are too much and as someone who respects the memories and legacies of Dr Murtala, we can confirm he will no longer be contesting” – Dr Sule Iddrisu’s team confirmed his withdrawal from Tamale Central contest.

Dr. Iddrissu, who is the brother of Education Minister, Haruna Iddrissu, was considered one of the strongest candidates eyeing the parliamentary seat. His withdrawal, however, has reshaped the political dynamics of the by-election, which has already attracted an unusually high number of contenders.

According to political watchers, the sheer volume of aspirants risked fragmenting support bases, making it increasingly difficult for even strong candidates to secure victory.

The Tamale Central seat became vacant following the tragic death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Comrade Murtala, who perished in a plane crash. His passing plunged the constituency and the entire nation into mourning and set the stage for a fiercely contested by-election.

Dr. Sule Iddrissu’s decision is expected to influence the strategies of remaining contenders and could consolidate votes in favor of a smaller pool of aspirants.

As the constituency heads toward the polls, voters are now watching closely to see how this latest twist will affect the balance of power and the eventual outcome of the race.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has set September 30, 2025 for the by-elections to take place in accordance with the law.

Article 112 (5) of Ghana’s constitution states that, whenever a vacancy occurs in Parliament, the Clerk of Parliament shall notify the Electoral Commission in writing within seven days after becoming aware that the vacancy has occurred; and a by-election shall be held within 30 days after the vacancy occurred except that where the vacancy occurred through the death of a member, the by-election shall be held within 60 days after the occurrence of the vacancy.
