Northern Regional Minister engages Water Company to address Tamale’s water shortage

The Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, has taken a proactive step to address Tamale’s ongoing water crisis. On March 3, 2025, he met with the management of the water company to receive a briefing on the current water situation in Tamale and its surrounding areas. His engagement highlights his commitment to ensuring access to clean and reliable water for residents.

During the meeting, the management of the Water Company cited two major reasons for the water rationing in Tamale:

1. Rapid Population Growth – The city’s increasing population has outpaced the capacity of existing raw and treated water pumps at Dalun and Nawuni.

2. Aged Infrastructure – Many of the water supply facilities are outdated and urgently require upgrades and maintenance.

Despite Biwater’s efforts to enhance the water system, the water demand continues to exceed supply, leading to persistent shortages.

To better understand the situation, Hon. Ali Adolf John visited the Dalun and Nawuni water pumps for a firsthand assessment. He examined the condition of the infrastructure and discussed the challenges affecting Tamale’s water supply. Additionally, he raised concerns about the impact of sand-winning activities on the Dalun water treatment plant. Reports indicate that these activities have polluted the White Volta River, further compromising raw water availability.

In response to the crisis, Hon. Ali Adolf John has pledged to work closely with the Water Company to find long-term solutions. He has assured residents that their concerns are being heard and has urged them to remain calm as efforts are made to resolve the issue.

With this engagement, the minister reaffirms his dedication to tackling Tamale’s water challenges and ensuring sustainable improvements in the region’s water supply.
