North East: 12 convicted over violent land dispute in Gbalo, fined GH¢4,800 each by Naleregu court

A District Magistrate Court in Nalerigu has convicted and sentenced 12 individuals involved in a violent land dispute in the Gbalo community, near Chereponi in the North East Region.

The convicts, all residents of Gbalo, were each fined 400 penalty units—equivalent to GH¢4,800—or face an 18-month prison term in default. The sentencing, delivered on Wednesday, follows nearly three years of legal proceedings stemming from the incident.

According to police reports, the disturbance occurred on July 25, 2022, when the group launched a violent attack on residents of the neighbouring Sagong/Kukpong community. The assault led to the burning of multiple houses and extensive property damage.

The suspects were apprehended on August 24, 2022, during an intelligence-led operation by the North East Regional Police Command.

Presiding over the case, His Worship Simon Kofi Bediako found the accused guilty on two counts: conspiracy to commit a crime and causing unlawful damage. He stressed the gravity of their actions and the need for accountability.

In a statement, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Robert Anabik Anmain, Acting Public Relations Officer, reaffirmed the police service’s commitment to law enforcement and community safety.

“Community members are advised to use peaceful and legal means to resolve conflicts and disputes in their communities,” DSP Anmain urged.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of lawful conflict resolution and the consequences of resorting to violence.
