The Residents of Wa and its surrounding communities can now breathe a sigh of relief after the Upper West Regional Police Command secured the conviction of one of the region’s most notorious armed robbers, 25-year-old Adinan Mahmoud, popularly known as “Okra.”

The suspect, who had been on the police wanted list for multiple robbery incidents, was arrested on Saturday, May 31, 2025, during an intelligence-led operation at his hideout in Sandemuni, a suburb of Wa.

He was arrested and presented before the Wa Circuit Court on Monday, June 2, where he pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit crime and robbery. The presiding Judge, His Honour Jonathan Avoogo, sentenced him to 18 years in prison with hard labour.

Two of Mahmoud’s alleged accomplices, Abdulai Ibrahim, also known as Baba, and Abdulai Kipo, pleaded not guilty. They have been remanded into prison and police custody, respectively. Their trial will continue on Tuesday, June 3, in the same court.

Police say Mahmoud’s conviction is a major step forward in restoring peace and public confidence in the region.

“The removal of Okra from the streets brings significant relief to residents, who can now feel more secure in their communities,” said ASP Michael Toya of the Public Affairs Directorate.

He added that the Police Command remains committed to tracking down and prosecuting all individuals who threaten the region’s peace and safety.
