His Highness the Paramount Chief of Tolon Traditional area, Major Retired Naa Sulemana Abubakari has donated 500 acres of land to the University for Development Studies (UDS).
The donation which was done at the Tolon Naa’s palace on 29, October 2024, is to support UDS research and organic Shea production initiatives.
His Highness, Tolon Naa at the donation ceremony reiterated that, the palace is committed to support the UDS to undertake its academic activities in the traditional area.
The ceremony was attended by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Alhassan Seidu and other officials of the University for Development Studies (UDS).
The Director of West Africa Center for Shea Innovation and Research (WACSIR-UDS), Professor Abukari Alhassan who announced this at a capacity building workshop for women Shea value actors in Tolon,Thursday said, the land will be used to promote organic Shea production and to set up a demonstration farm aimed at fostering agricultural innovation and sustainable development in Ghana.
He noted that, the training workshop is as a result of the benevolence of the Tolon Naa who started the process by donating the land to the University.
Professor Alhassan said, the workshop demonstrate UDS mission of promoting equitable and socio-economic transformation of communities through practically oriented, community based, problem solving, gender sensitive and interactive research, teaching, learning and outreach activities.
25 women Shea pickers and producers drawn from cooperatives across the Tolon District took part in the training workshop.
The WACSIR-UDS capacity building worship on Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points for Shea value chain actors was funded by RAINS Ghana Ltd.
