The Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) has called an emergency meeting following a controversial incident involving the Minister of Health, Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, during his visit to the facility on April 22, 2025.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, 23 April 2025, the Association of Doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) expressed serious concern over what it described as misleading media reports and viral social media commentary surrounding a verbal exchange between the Minister and the Head of the Accident and Emergency Department.

According to the DATTH statement, the exchange arose while the department head was explaining the challenges encountered in the management of a referred patient. The situation, the association explained, unexpectedly escalated during what was initially a routine professional briefing.

The statement from the association strongly condemned the media’s portrayal of the incident, calling it “unfair” and harmful to the reputation of their colleague. “Our colleague has always discharged his duties diligently and professionally,” the statement read, adding that he has played a key role in delivering quality healthcare at the unit.

DATTH urged the media to exercise greater responsibility when reporting on sensitive medical matters and cautioned the public against spreading unverified information on social media platforms.

Reaffirming their support for their colleague, the association underscored that the physician was merely drawing attention to systemic challenges undermining patient care. They warned of possible industrial actions if healthcare workers continue to be scapegoated for issues stemming from infrastructural and administrative shortcomings.

According to the statement, an emergency meeting has been scheduled by the doctors to deliberate on the incident and determine their next course of action.
