The Interior Minister, Hon Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka has reiterated that, the upwelling of unregistered and untraceable fire arms entering the country pose a threat to national security.
Hon Muntaka noted that, the influx of illegal firearms is the cause of most violent conflicts in the country, warning that, the situation if not curb will jeopardize national security and peace.
The Minister of Interior raised these concerns during a working visit to the Northern Region, Wednesday May 21, 2025.
“The number of arms in the hands of our citizens is reaching an alarming level. It is giving the Peace Council, the police and other security agencies a lot of headache. At the slightest provocation you hear a gun shot. How did the people get the guns?”, he query
Mr. Muntaka said, the alarming proportion of illegal fire arms in the hands of individuals should be a concern for all Ghanaians, adding that, there should be a holistic approach in curbing the proliferation of arms in the country.
“We need private individuals to partner with the government, this cannot be done by the government alone. Technology has advance to the point where we should be able to detect who imports and sell these guns. How can we leverage technology to make our country safer? “. He quizzed
