Former Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Karaga, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to focus on sustaining the economic gains made by the previous administration rather than engaging in blame games.
Speaking at a press conference organized by the Minority Caucus in Parliament, dubbed “The True State of the Nation,” Dr. Amin Adam refuted claims made by President Mahama in his State of the Nation Address (SONA), where he described the economy as weak and struggling. The former minister dismissed these assertions as inaccurate.
“Ghanaians deserve the truth. The NPP left behind a recovering economy with clear prospects for stability and growth. The president should focus on building on these gains rather than resorting to blame games,” he stated.
Dr Amin Adam further credited the stability of the cedi and the exchange rate to the robust international reserves left behind by the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration. He argued that the current government should not take credit for the progress.
“By the end of 2024, inflation had dropped significantly from 54% to 23.8%, GDP growth reached 6.4%, exceeding the IMF target of 4%, and our international reserves stood at a historic $8.9 billion,” he noted.
According to him, the Akufo-Addo government successfully revived the economy following the global economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
With Ghana facing ongoing economic challenges, the former finance minister’s remarks add to the political discourse on the country’s financial outlook, as the current administration seeks strategies to navigate the fiscal landscape.
