Ras Mubarak, the former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, has filed a lawsuit against telecommunications giant MTN Ghana (Scancom PLC Ltd) at the High Court of Justice. Mubarak is seeking a $5 million compensation for what he described as damages caused by MTN’s inability to deliver reliable services.

The outspoken politician and activist revealed in a Facebook post that his legal team had given MTN Ghana ample time to address the issue, including offering an apology and reasonable compensation. However, he noted that the telecom company failed to act, prompting him to take legal action.

In his statement, Mubarak emphasized the need to hold large corporations accountable for the quality of services they provide to consumers. “Never must we allow big corporations to take customers for granted,” he declared, signaling his resolve to pursue justice for what he believes is a broader consumer rights issue.

The specifics of the case, including the nature of the service disruptions and their impact, are yet to be disclosed. However, Mubarak’s decision to escalate the matter to the courts has sparked widespread discussion on social media about the rights of consumers and the responsibilities of service providers.

MTN Ghana has yet to comment on the lawsuit. This development could set a significant precedent for corporate accountability in the telecommunications sector in Ghana.
