Ghana’s Minister for Finance, Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced a new educational initiative to support the children of cocoa farmers across the country. In a Facebook post shared on Monday, the Minister revealed that President John Dramani Mahama has introduced a Tertiary Education Scholarship Scheme tailored specifically for the children of cocoa farmers.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, it is my pleasure to announce to cocoa farmers that President Mahama has introduced a Tertiary Education Scholarship Scheme for children of cocoa farmers,” Hon. Ato Forson stated.

As part of the rollout plan, the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) will, in the 2025/2026 cocoa season, work to develop the operational modalities of the scheme. The scholarships are expected to take effect from the 2026/2027 academic year.

The program is designed to ease the financial burden on cocoa-growing families and to ensure that children from farming communities have greater access to tertiary education opportunities.

The move has been welcomed by many stakeholders in the agricultural and education sectors, with praise for its potential to improve rural livelihoods and enhance educational equity.

Details on the scholarship’s eligibility requirements, selection process, and coverage will be announced by COCOBOD in the coming months.
