The Parliament of Ghana is expected to sit on Mondays and Saturdays starting next week, in a move aimed at fast-tracking legislative work before the House rises.

The announcement was made by the Majority Leader, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, on the floor of Parliament today while presenting the Business Statement for the seventh week ending Saturday, July 12, 2025.

According to Hon. Ayariga, the decision is to create room for the maturity of key Legislative Instruments (L.I.s) that are currently before the House. He stressed that the extra working days were necessary to meet crucial deadlines before Parliament adjourns sine die.

Hon. Ayariga, who also chairs the Business Committee, revealed that as many as 55 ministers of state, along with the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, are scheduled to appear before the House next week to respond to various questions filed by Members of Parliament.

He further indicated that some bills may be introduced for first reading, and in urgent cases, could be fast-tracked through all stages in a single sitting, in line with Standing Order 160. Committee reports are also expected to be laid, considered, and debated during the extended week.

“Motions may be debated and their consequential resolutions, if any, taken during the week. By Standing Order 216(2), and subject to Standing Order 67, the Committee submits to the House the order in which business shall be taken,” Hon. Ayariga stated.

In a sharp response, the Minority Leader, Hon. Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, called on the Majority Leader to prioritise the appearance of the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Madam Jean Mensa, to update the House on the recent parliamentary rerun in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency.

The extended sitting days reflect Parliament’s increasing urgency as it works through a packed legislative calendar before the end of the current session.
