The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has firmly rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun polling station elections in 19 centres within the Ablekuma North constituency, calling the move “unlawful,” “disingenuous,” and contrary to a High Court order.
Addressing the media on Thursday 3rd July 2025, General Secretary of the Party, Mr Justin Kodua Frimpong, questioned the legal basis and timing of the EC’s sudden U-turn. He insisted that the EC had previously confirmed only three polling stations remained to complete the collation process not 19.
“This talk about 19 polling stations is an afterthought,” Mr Kodua said. “It is not supported by the facts or the EC’s own prior statements and records.”
According to the NPP, the High Court on January 4, 2025, ordered the EC to complete the collation and declaration of results in four constituencies, including Ablekuma North. While three of those have since been completed, Ablekuma North remains in limbo.
Mr Kodua accused the opposition NDC of using “thuggery” to disrupt the collation process, citing incidents of violence and destruction at EC premises. “The EC blamed the NDC for storming their offices and attacking officials. Why should the NDC be rewarded for that lawlessness?” he asked.
The NPP claims that results from 59 out of 62 outstanding polling stations were already collated in the presence of all party agents and EC officials. The party fears the rerun plan is politically motivated and sets a dangerous precedent.
“If we allow this, we’re telling parties they can disrupt collation and demand reruns when results don’t favour them,” Kodua warned, adding that the EC’s independence is under threat.
The party called on civil society, traditional leaders, and religious groups to speak up, and announced that it would challenge the EC’s decision in court.
“In a democracy, election outcomes must be determined by ballots, not by violence or backdoor deals,” the General Secretary concluded.
